Switching car insurance is easy.

With most insurance companies, you can cancel at the end of the insurance year with a notice period of one month. The insurance year usually ends on December 31st, so that by the reference date November 30th can be terminated. On the key date, the previous insurer must have received the written cancellation by post or fax. At best, you should do this a few days earlier and ask for a written confirmation. If you cancel by e-mail, special conditions must be observed and in the event of a dispute it is difficult to prove receipt of the e-mail, so we advise you against this option.

Under certain conditions, there is a special right of termination for motor vehicle insurance, so that the insurance contract can be terminated prematurely:

  • Contribution increases without changing the benefit or insurance packages
  • Vehicle change or new vehicle purchase
  • Change of ownership or change in the number of drivers
  • Accident or damage

There are three types of motor insurance: motor liability insurance, partial coverage and fully comprehensive.

But which insurance is right for me? We explain to you where the differences lie and what you should pay attention to before completing the contract!

Motor vehicle liability insurance

Motor vehicle liability insurance is required by law, i.e. no vehicle may be driven on public roads without it. Motor vehicle liability insurance guarantees that third parties who have been harmed by driving a vehicle can always claim for damages. Personal injury, property damage and financial loss are covered.

Partial insurance

The partially comprehensive insurance covers damage to your own vehicle for which no one can be held liable and regulates this in the event of fire, explosion, theft, glass breakage, short circuit, force majeure such as storms, hail, lightning or floods. In addition, collisions with animals that are subject to the hunting law are also insured.

Fully comprehensive insurance

Fully comprehensive insurance usually includes the full scope of services of partially comprehensive insurance, but extends this to include comprehensive protection against collision damage. This includes both self-caused damage and damage caused by third parties. In addition, damage caused by vandalism and traffic accident escapes are covered. In contrast to partially comprehensive insurance, comprehensive insurance also offers help if the reason for damage to the car cannot be proven or if the person who caused the accident is not insured or unable to pay.

Fully comprehensive insurance is always worthwhile for new cars and vehicles that are not more than 5 years old. In the case of used cars, it depends on the value of the vehicle or the no-claims discount of the insured person, because while there is a no-claims discount with fully comprehensive insurance and the amount is reduced through damage-free driving, it remains constant with partial comprehensive insurance. Other aspects apply to old and youngtimers, as the current values are sometimes very high.

Partial coverage is worthwhile if the vehicle owner does not want to take any financial risks in the event of damage to their own vehicle for which no one can be held liable. In addition to the age of the vehicle, the conclusion of a partially comprehensive insurance should also be based on whether there are often storms, accidents with wildlife or theft in the respective place of residence.

TIP: Since the fully comprehensive insurance is subject to the no-claims discount, it is possible that the fully comprehensive insurance is cheaper than the partially comprehensive insurance. The loss-free years are decisive here. Try it out or have it calculated for you.
